2025 Arts In Bloom

The Arts in Bloom exhibit is always a hightlight of the HCA's year! This year is no exception. Over 70 artists submitted artwork for consideration from 32 towns and 3 states. We received a wonderful variety of work.

Out of 173 pieces, Juror Joseph Fontinha selected 35 for display in this year's exhibition. Six pieces were identified for awards that will be announced at our reception on Friday May 9th at 6PM.  Hopkinton Garden Club members will choose 8 artworks to inspire a floral arrangement that will be on display May 9th - May 29th.

The HCA Art In Bloom 2025 Exhibition will be available for viewing at the HCA's Lotvin Family gallery April 29- May 29, 2025 as well as online here.

Catherine Gruetzke-Blais
$850.00

Dimensions: 40 x 30 x 1.5
Medium: mixed media: collage and acrylic paint on canvas
Year created: 2025What inspired you to make this work? This information will be on the gallery label.: This piece was created intuitively. I knew I wanted the still-life photograph and other pieces of paper to be incorporated into it, so I started from there. I am always thinking in color and texture, so I followed a process where I trusted my judgment of what to do next, even if it meant painting my hands and printing with them. The blue color hints at calm and peace; there is a large pink heart-type shape to the right which could represent love; but mostly, the piece is a bit chaotic as I try to understand the world we are living in. I am trying to be understanding, but there is a lot on my mind. Somehow, the process of creating this became emotional for me.

This information will be on the gallery label.: I kept my distance and quietly watched this very elderly couple make their way down to water's edge. I heard the husband, say "we can see the water from here & sit on a bench" & she responded, "I want go all the way to the shore, feel the waves." The husband patiently walked with his wife who was frail & using a walker to make her way down at her pace to where the tide was coming in on a very chilly & windy fall day. It exuberated love, determination and patience. I purposely didn't take a pic on their return walk though she looked exhausted she had a huge smile while her hair was whipping in the wind.

Regardless of what is happening outside, around us, or even within... flowers bring joy, comfort and pleasure. Just the creation of such work brings an uplift to my spirit.

In my own life I've worked many labor jobs finding fulfillment in them although they may seem difficult. I also spent some time working on a fishing boat in my youth with my father. Because of my experience on the fishing boat I had a better understanding of being a fisherman and what it takes.
