2025 Arts In Bloom

The Arts in Bloom exhibit is always a hightlight of the HCA's year! This year is no exception. Over 70 artists submitted artwork for consideration from 32 towns and 3 states. We received a wonderful variety of work.

Out of 173 pieces, Juror Joseph Fontinha selected 35 for display in this year's exhibition. Six pieces were identified for awards that will be announced at our reception on Friday May 9th at 6PM.  Hopkinton Garden Club members will choose 8 artworks to inspire a floral arrangement that will be on display May 9th - May 29th.

The HCA Art In Bloom 2025 Exhibition will be available for viewing at the HCA's Lotvin Family gallery April 29- May 29, 2025 as well as online here.

Year created: 2025What inspired you to make this work? This information will be on the gallery label.: I am very attracted to the vintage floral paintings you see created during the Rembrandt Dutch Golden Age. This is my abstract take on these types of paintings. I have been very drawn to dark greens and shades of magenta. I however am an abstract artist and do not paint flowers. I create with fluid acrylic paint and never use a paint brush. I manipulate the paint using various methods, blow dryer, palette knives, balloons. Using fluid paint is working with the laws of physics and motion. Gravity, chemistry and density all play equally pivotal roles making each piece unique in their own way. I have been experimenting with paint density and reactions of different paint brands to each other which can have a surprising result.

Having lived in Framingham since 1983, I often drove by the Ken's restaurant and noticed the vintage sign. I have a love for signs since 1978 when I became a union sign painter in the Boston area.I decided to paint a picture of the sign and when I kept hearing about the Barbie movie, I decided to pair up my two of my favorite things.

Year created: 2024What inspired you to make this work? This information will be on the gallery label.: The inspiration I had for this piece was having the feeling love in my heart and wanting to explore my own heartbeat. I intuitively painted from that feeling. As an abstract artist I knew the shape wouldn’t necessarily be a traditional representational one. Having felt the warmth of my heart, I chose the color palette. As I began to paint the abstract shapes and lines began to appear and when I put my brush down, I knew it was complete. This work was done in one sitting.

Medium: oil on canvas
Year created: 2024What inspired you to make this work? This information will be on the gallery label.: “You can just feel the history in this place,” said a guest of my grandmother’s one evening. Upon hearing this I began to see our cabin with a new perspective. Instead of ‘these old things have always been here’ I saw a patchwork of contributions from generations of family that have been stitched together to create our peaceful cabin retreat. In this work I am providing you the same lens as that guest used in order to observe something I dare not take for granted, and to feel the same family history and welcoming environment detectable even to an outsider. This painting is part of a series of cabin portraits created to explore my ongoing appreciation for all things handmade, what they reveal about their creators, and the powerful effect they have on our living space.

This information will be on the gallery label.: Set next to a chilly creek and towering pines, our cabin does not boast lavish accommodations but instead shines with handmade and modestly curated items. "You can just feel the history in this place,” said a guest of my grandmother’s one evening. Upon overhearing this I looked around the room and began to see the cabin in a new light. This painting provides the viewer with the same lens as that guest and is part of a series of cabin portraits created to explore my ongoing appreciation for all things handmade, what they reveal about the people who created them, and the powerful effect they have on our living space.

$3,900.00

Dimensions: 30 x 30 x 1.5
Medium: Oil on panel
Year created: 2020What inspired you to make this work? This information will be on the gallery label.: My work brings beauty to the table. Painting plein-air, I create lush, luminous, layered surfaces in my garden. My senses are heightened to color, texture, light, and smell. I dive into the tangled life cycles of plants and flowers with energetic mark-making, exuberant color and line, intuitive looking, layering, and wiping. I start by planting for how I’ll want to paint: colors, heights, when things bloom, where my easel will be. It’s a meditative, spiritual process. I want people to experience that heightened awareness and see beauty in our vulnerable environment. My paintings reimagine plein-air landscape, dancing between near and far, abstraction and representation. In-depth focus replaces distant vistas. Over 3–7 sittings, passing days, and weather transform my viewpoints. Manipulating paint, I strive to capture the essence of a place through the lyrical rhythms of growth, bloom, and decay.

Dimensions: 23 x 15 x 1
Medium: Monotype Collage, Oil on Paper with Additions
Year created: 2024What inspired you to make this work? This information will be on the gallery label.: I am inspired by the beauty, resilience and changes that occur in the natural world, and most especially the paradox of permanence/impermanence. I am drawn to the organic shapes, patterns and colors in nature, particularly rocks, feathers, leaves, flora and water. My work explores the fragile harmony between humanity and nature through vessels and botanical forms. Vessels, both literal and symbolic, serve as carriers of experience, memory, and change, while botanical elements reflect cycles of growth, impermanence, and renewal. Through monotype and collage techniques, I hope this work captures the tension between stillness and movement, containment and release, endurance and fragility.
